What to Expect from the FOUNDATIONS Program
Participants can expect a deeply interactive and experiential learning environment, including:
Hands-on practice every day
You will actively learn and practice comfort measures, positioning, and body-based techniques—not just observe them1:1 mentorship and real-time feedback
You will be seen, supported, and guided individually throughout the trainingAn intimate learning container
With no more than 6 participants, there is space for reflection, questions, and integrationA balance of science and intuition
Combining anatomy, physiology, and clinical understanding with emotional presence and intuitive careCommunity building
You will form meaningful connections with other doulas and begin building your professional networkGuidance on entering the workforce
Including support and orientation on how to begin the MassHealth doula provider registration process
What You Will Learn
By the end of FOUNDATIONS, participants will have a strong base in:
Pregnancy, Labor & Postpartum Knowledge
Basic maternal anatomy and physiology
Understanding the stages of labor and what to expect
Common medical interventions and how they impact birth
Awareness of common complications and when to refer
Comfort Measures & Bodywork
Positioning for labor progression
Hands-on comfort techniques (touch, movement, pressure)
Partner involvement and support techniques
Use of the body to support physiological birth
Emotional Support & Presence
How to hold space with calm, confidence, and awareness
Supporting clients through fear, intensity, and uncertainty
Developing your doula presence—how you show up in the room
Advocacy & Communication
Supporting informed decision-making
Navigating communication with care providers
Advocacy through non-confrontational, respectful dialogue
Trauma-Informed & Culturally Responsive Care
Understanding the impact of past experiences on birth
Providing care that is respectful, inclusive, and aware of cultural context
Supporting diverse families with humility and intention

Scope of practice and boundaries
Ethics and best practices
Beginning to shape your identity and voice as a doula
Orientation to the MassHealth doula provider process, including steps to begin registration and participation
